About Inverewe Garden (National Trust for Scotland)

Inverewe Garden, located near Poolewe in Wester Ross on Scotland’s northwest coast, is a spectacular botanical garden managed by the National Trust for Scotland. The garden spans approximately 50 acres, encompassing a diverse collection of plants from around the world, including delicate subtropical and temperate species that flourish thanks to the Gulf Stream’s moderating influence. Established in the early 20th century by Osgood Mackenzie, the garden is well known for its pioneering efforts in shelter planting, using native pines and other hardy trees to protect tender plants from harsh Atlantic winds. The layout includes formal terraces, woodland walks, and open lawn areas, showcasing rhododendrons, magnolias, azaleas, and rare conifers. Visitors enjoy peaceful strolls along 3 miles of maintained paths, leading through a landscape that blends natural beauty and horticultural artistry. The garden also features a walled garden, a visitor center with exhibitions about the area’s horticultural history, and a tea room. Wildlife such as red squirrels, otters, and a variety of bird species can be spotted amid the grounds, enriching the outdoor experience. Inverewe Garden’s combination of botanical richness, oceanic views, and tranquil atmosphere makes it a unique destination for horticulture enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking nature close to the rugged Highlands coast.
